Forests are crucial to life on Earth. They supply oxygen, filter water, moderate temperatures, store atmospheric carbon and provide habitat for an immense diversity of species. They also supply timber, a renewable resource we use to make lumber, paper, fuel and other products.

Forest ecology is the study of how all the components of a forest — plants, animals, soils and microorganisms — interact with each other and their environment. Understanding these interactions is essential for managing forests sustainably, ensuring biodiversity and addressing environmental challenges such as climate change.

By engaging in activities such as tree identification, tree measurement and other forest health assessments, Envirothon participants gain practical skills and a real-world understanding of forest ecology. They also have the opportunity to explore forest careers as they interact with forest ecologists, forestland managers and other professionals.
