SOILS AND LAND USE
Soils are crucial for life on Earth; they facilitate plant growth, water filtration, carbon storage and nutrient cycling, and they support a wide range of organisms, from microorganisms to large mammals. Studying soils and land use helps us understand how soils form, how they interact with plants and animals, and how land is managed for various purposes. It also enables us to understand the relationship between land management practices and soil health, helping to ensure sustainable land use, prevent soil degradation, and maintain ecosystems that support both human and environmental well-being.
Through activities such as testing and surveying soil and analyzing the impacts of human activities on soil health, Envirothon participants learn practical skills in assessing and managing soil and land resources. They also have the opportunity to interact with soil scientists, land-use planners and other professionals who can provide inspiration to pursue a career in this field.
