AQUATIC ECOLOGY

Aquatic ecology is the study of how organisms interact with each other and their environments in water-based ecosystems, including freshwater and marine habitats. Aquatic ecology helps us understand how aquatic systems function, how they support biodiversity, and how human activities such as pollution and climate change affect them. This knowledge is key to protecting water resources, conserving species and ensuring the sustainability of vital ecosystem services that depend on aquatic habitats.

By engaging in hands-on learning about aquatic ecosystems, Envirothon participants gain practical knowledge of the living and nonliving factors that shape them, including water chemistry, temperature and nutrient cycles. Students are also introduced to careers in aquatic ecology as they interact with professionals who work in this field.
