This comprehensive resource includes information about the competition, learning objectives for all five station topics, suggested learning activities and links to other resources. Also plan to attend the advisor training in early December, where you’ll meet other Envirothon advisors, learn about the year’s current issue and hear ideas for getting started.
Oregon Envirothon Advisor Guide
If you’re new to Envirothon and considering joining the program, this video primer provides a brief overview:
PACE YOURSELF
Envirothon involves learning in the classroom and in the field, leading up to an in-person competition with dozens of Oregon high schools. Think of Oregon Envirothon as a four-plus-month student project, ending with the competition in May. Below is a suggested schedule you can use as a rough guide to prepare your students for the competition.
NOVEMBER
- Visit the Oregon Envirothon website for information and important dates.
- Obtain administrative approval for participation in Envirothon (if needed).
- Register for Oregon Envirothon advisor training (usually the first week in December).
DECEMBER
- Attend Oregon Envirothon advisor training.
- Review station resources on Oregon Envirothon website.
- Develop study plan for your team.
- Schedule resource professionals and field trips to provide team with hands-on training.
JANUARY
- Begin studying soils and land use (with focus on soil types and land conservation).
- Begin studying forest ecology (with focus on tree identification, forest ecosystems, management practices and conservation). Field trip to a local forest for hands-on practice.
FEBRUARY
- Begin studying wildlife (with focus on wildlife identification, habitat needs and local species).
- Begin studying aquatic ecology (with focus on water quality, aquatic ecosystems, fish species and human impacts). Field trip to a local water body for hands-on practice.
- Continue studying “core four” topics.
MARCH
- Introduce current issue and oral presentation scenario.
- Research background and possible solutions for scenario.
- Draft oral presentation.
- Continue studying “core four” and current issue topics.
APRIL
- Register team by deadline.
- Submit bus transportation and substitute reimbursement requests by deadline.
- Arrange lodging (if needed).
- Refine oral presentation scenario.
- Submit recording of oral presentation by deadline.
- Continue studying “core four” and current issue topics.
- Conduct “mock” Envirothon competition using prior tests (available on station resource page).
MAY
- Compete in the Oregon Envirothon. Have fun!
JUNE – JULY
- Cheer on Oregon’s team as they compete at the international NCF-Envirothon!
